Up to 1 in 4 people have experienced mental illness at some point in their lives (McManus et al, 2007; Singleton et al, 2000), so it is likely that lived-experience is prevalent to some extent across the workforce.
To share or not to share?
There are different opinions among professionals about whether it is useful or beneficial for them to share their lived experience with clients.
Guidance and Training:
There is little guidance and training available on the subject of self-disclosure to help practitioners make decisions about what they share, when, and for what purpose.
